WHAT IS RUGBY?
RUGBY TERMINOLOGY
Loose Head Prop: keeps head on the outside of scrum, supports hooker in scrum, lifts jumper in the lineout
Tight Head Prop: head between the opposition prop and hooker, supports hooker in scrum, lifts jumper in the lineout
Hooker: Middle of the front row of scrum, responsible for winning the ball, throws ball in duing lineouts
Loose Forwards/Loosies: Tallest on the field, lineout jumper, binds in the crum and drives forward
Flankers: Back Row of the scrum,aim to win the ball through turn overs, keep outside contain
Number 8: Links between the forward pack and backs,
Controls ball at back of scrum before attack begins
Scrum-half: Links between forwards and backs, feeds ball into the scrum, collcts ball from the back
Fly-half: Directs play on the pitch, supposed to be a good decison maker and communicator, most likely the goal kicker too
Wings: Stay outside the backline, score tries and finish plays, should be fast and agile, powerful enough to break through tacklers
Inside/Outside Center: Good reader of the game, direct attacks, breach defences, tackle advancing opponets
Full Back: Field opponents kicks, last line of defence, good kicker
Backs: players numbered 9-15 who do not participate in scrums and lineouts
Forwards: the group of players numbered 1-8 who form the scrums and lineouts

RUGBY POSITIONS
Blindside: short or narrow side of the field in relation to a scrum or broken play
Conversion: After scoring a try the team will attempt to kick the ball through the uprights for 2 points
Drop goal: Player drops the ball so it touches the ground and then kicks it through the uprights. Drop goals count as three points and can be scored any time during the game. Like a 'Drop Kick' in football
Gary Owen: A very high kick that is short, like an onside kick in football
Grubber : To kick the ball so it rolls on the ground with the intention of regaining possession
Lineout: the setplay restarting play after the ball has been taken out or kicked to touch
Mark : A place on the field where a penalty takes place. The ref then designates it as the location where for the scrum
Maul : Ball carrier is held up but not tackled by an opposing player, once another player joins the battle a maul is formed
Offside : Player is in front of the ball when their team is attacking with the ball
Onside : Player is behind the ball when their team is attacking with the ball
Penalty kick: Restart the game after a penalty. The team awarded the penalty has the option to kick a field goal, kick into touch or decline the kick and opt for a scrum.
Pitch: the field
Red card: Ref raises a red card. Penalty for severe foul play or violent conduct. The player is ordered out of the game with no replacement. two yellow cards also equal a red
Restart: the kick restarting play after a half or after points are scored
Ruck: after a player has been tackled and released the ball, both ball players will rush to the ball and try to gain possession
Scrum: when the ball is put back into play after an infraction and each team's forwards lock together to try and gain possession of the ball
Touch: the out-of-bounds line
Try: scored by touching the ball down with control in the opposing goal area. Tries are worth 5 points
Yellow card: Ref raises a yellow card. The player must sit out for a 10 minute penalty while his team plays short handed. Two yellows will get you ejected
